GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — Northern Michigan veterans and their families were honored during a small ceremony held by Representative Jack Bergman.
The ceremony was held at Bergman’s Traverse City office.
The veterans were honored with medals they earned during service but never received.
For some, family members accepted the medals on behalf of their loved one who has passed away
But for others, like Navy Corpsman Dan Priestap, the day was a surprise after his daughter found out he had earned medals during his service.
“I had no idea why we were all together, there was no birthdays. It was just supposed to be a family day… turned out to be a big family day,” said Dan Priestap, who served in Navy from 1959- 1963.
Priestap never knew he earned the medals and said he will now proudly display them at home.
